There were a number of memorable things happen this week. A couple I could have done without.
Event #1 - My beautiful taurus station wagon is no longer beautiful thanks to one of the Laurels in our ward. Tuesday night at the end of the YW activity night, she backed her truck out of the parking stall and her hitch put a pretty good dent into the right back of my car. She lucked out that it didn't hit the rear light or the bumper. It is just between the two. She happens to be the daughter of my visiting teaching companion. She kept saying over and over again how sorry she was about it. How could I get mad in the face of such contrition? She will be paying for repairs though. Lucky for her, Dave can probably do it much cheaper than most repair shops.
Event #2 - Friday morning on my way to work I got a call from Spencer telling me he has had an accident at his job at Subway, he is going to have to go get stitches in his finger but that I shouldn't worry, it was no big deal. Here is what he had done (warning: it is quite graphic!)
He was doing the morning prep work which involves cutting up the vegetables. He was cutting a cucumber and apparently mistook his finger for one. He was sent to work med and they stitched him up, 12 stitches total and he has to wear a splint. Apparently, he just barely missed cutting the tendon. Lucky for him. One of these days, I hope Spencer will learn how to safely handle knives. Here is the finished work.
Event #3 - Saturday night for our date night, Dave took me to see a play up at the U of U campus, Kingsbury Hall. It was the Screwtape Letters, a two character show. It was quite good. At the end of the play, the couple that was sitting just to the right of me stood up to go, but before they did, they asked me if I had ever taught at Provo High. I said yes. It ended up that both of them had been my students that last year I taught 92-93. Sara Reece and Scott Thompson who are now married to each other. Scott said he went to Argentina on his mission. What a blast from the past! As if that wasn't enough, we were getting off the shuttle that the U provided that took us to our parked car and as we got off a lady asked me if my name was Cindy. I said yes. She asked if I had taught Spanish at Provo High...dodododo, dodododo (twilight zone music). It was ANOTHER of my former students. This one actually had lived across the street from me when we lived in Provo and had been in my ward. Her mother had been a great support to me as I went through my divorce from Mike. I gave her a big hug and visited with her for awhile. Diana Nielsen (can't remember her married name now). She and her husband live up near Hill Air Force base and have one child. That was so crazy. I haven't run into a former high school student in forever and then in one night I run into 3 former students!
Event #4 - Our downstairs tenants finally moved out this week. They bought their first home, but since it was a short sale it was taking forever for everything to be finalized. They initially thought they would be out by the end of November. She is due to have a baby next month so it's great that they could get moved now. Brandon & Jessica Waite moved in about a year ago after our first renters, Dan & Rachel Elder bought THEIR first house. We are now looking for new tenants that hopefully will stay longer than a year since we will be hopefully leaving on a mission and it would be great to not have tenant turnover while we are gone.
Other miscellaneous news...we have had one big snowstorm, finally. But we continue to have a rather mild winter. Work has been full of drama, but the end result may turn out positive. I'm hoping that a raise may be in the works soon. Dave and I have gone to two ballroom dancing classes this month, both times we have been learning the waltz. It would be great if we could go consistently for awhile and actually become proficient dancers. Another couple in our ward invited us to join them as they have been going as well.
Alyssa is less than two weeks away from her due date. Jenni continues to look for work with no success yet.

Third Anniversary Celebrated
Woohoo! Dave and I have made it to our third year wedding anniversary, it was Monday, Jan. 9th. At our age, you would think we'd be celebrating number 30, but then again, at our age and with our past history, it is as much a victory to be celebrating #3 as #30. In fact, I think we appreciate even more finding ourselves happily married at 3 years than most people would who haven't been where we have in the past.
We kept our celebrating simple. We invited a few friends/family to join us back at "the scene of the crime" - Golden Corral, where we had our post-wedding get-to-gether on the day we were married with friends and family. It was nice because some of those friends we don't get to see very often so it was a great time to get caught up on each others lives.
I have gone back to working full-time. For the last 2.5 years I have been working 3/4 time and I have enjoyed that very much. However, office policies and politics too complicated to explain briefly and too boring to explain completely have become such that I felt it was the best way to go. It hopefully will only be for the next year or a little bit longer since Dave and I hope to serve a full-time church mission while Spencer is out on his and Dave has set his retirement date for a year from this month.
January weather has been more like spring than winter this year. Our fruit trees have started putting forth leaves so if it doesn't go back to being winter soon, our fruit trees don't stand a chance. How nice has it been? Yesterday I walked Chico without a coat on, just a sweatshirt. Mid-January in Utah, mind you! The ski industry is languishing. The mountains are practically bare! And we have not seen any deer roaming the neighborhood like we typically do during the winter months. There's no point. There is no snow to force them down the mountainside!

New Year 2012
I am joining the blogging world! It is my new year's resolution to make regular posts and chronicle the events of my life and that of my family. I used to do a good job of that prior to the blogging phenomenon and when my kids were small, using a word processor and printing out family newsletters and allowing the US Postal Service to deliver the news. Now, times have changed apparently and this is the most up-to-date way and it is via the world wide web. So I'm jumping in and I'm looking forward to the events of the coming year.
I should have some big events to report. I have a second granddaughter due to arrive in February and a name has FINALLY been chosen - Cosette Leilani Steck. Alyssa has labored over choosing the name as much as she will labor to deliver this child into the world, I think! Dave & I will make a trip to England in March to welcome the new baby and visit with family.
I should have a marriage to report about in April since Jenni has announced that she is engaged to Mark Gwilliam and they have chosen April 21st, but the date seems to be a bit fluid and not set in stone.
I also hope to report sending off my son, Spencer, to serve as a full-time missionary somewhere yet to be determined as well as the date. Spencer has just been made manager of the Highland Subway, which means a substantial increase in pay, which hopefully translates into a faster accumulation of savings to make this event happen.
My husband, Dave, has announced that his goal is to retire from the Unified Fire Authority Jan 2013. Our goal is to work on developing a plan that will allow us to open our own business. We also hope to serve a mission together sometime while Spencer is serving as well.
So on the first day of 2012, I look forward to seeing what the future has in store. Lots of happiness and hopefully minimal sorrow. But as always, I ask God to take my hand and walk with me.
Let the adventures begin!
